MAYOBRIDGE GOLF CLUB - BORN OUT OF LOVE OF THE GAME
Mayobridge Golf Club is unique as it was born out of the love for the game of golf. Father & Son Joseph & Shane Fegan were members of Warrenpoint GC for many years before they looked closer to home, the family farm, to design and create a very unique golf course in the heart of the Co.Down countryside. What started out as nine holes back in 1999, quickly became 13 holes and then a full 18 hole course by late summer 2003. It was affiliated into the Golfing Union Of Ireland in 2005. Play amongst old white washed cottages from centuries past such as Connolly's and Murphy's each with a story to tell. The 17th fairway and 18th tee box are nestled beside Connolly's cottage , many years ago it was known locally as 'the buck and bull ' an illegal Irish shebeen. The name came about as Connolly had a buck goat and a bull. The story goes that Connolly did not worry too much about drinking laws at the time and would sell drink to any age as long as they had the money, the police found out about the shebeen and arrived with horses and carts and broke every bottle. The young people of the nearby village of Mayobridge found out what was happening and soon arrived toppling hundreds of stones off the long lane leading down to Connolly's cottage, apparently the police took 3 days to dig themselves and the horses and carts out.
